Big safes will not fit into a 36 inch door frame without tipping them on their side and that is where having a pro installer helps! If you have a truck and trailer and want one in a garage all you need a is a couple friends and a few pieces of 3/4 sch 40 PVC to roll them in on, if you have to go over door frames and door way transitions you need steel plates to cover the floor, wood or tile you need plywood to protect it. Putting any safe that weighs more than a few hundred lbs on a second or third floor is a huge mistake, remember what goes up will come down and heat rises! Measure your door jams and be realistic on what you are looking at because some people expect you to be able to slide a Franklin 50 into a 100 year old house across wood floors and up two flights of stairs with no problem and it's just not realistic. If you cannot bolt one to a slab and want it in a living space buy two smaller safes and spread the load out on the floor, I have seen safes fall through the floor in house fires and if you have any steps make sure they are supported when the safe is being delivered. The fire rating is something I consider to be the most important because to me that means the most living out in the sticks where the fire department might be a way off.

My buddy owns a gun shop and I have helped install and move at least 300, as some have mentioned you are not buying something that will keep a pro thief out you are buying a place to keep your guns out of the hands out everyone else and yes I can break into any commercially sold gun safe no matter what lock it has! I prefer manual locks, it needs to be bolted down to concrete and even if you have a dry rod installed or other humidification control device you need to really pay close attention to your guns because they can still rust in a humid climate. Compared to a friends two Liberty safes, we both agreed that the Superior was a better safe for less money. Gloss Ivory paint with black chrome five spoke handle and lock.
When I was shopping for safes, I looked at lot of them and bought a Superior Safe. They do recommend you bolt the safe to the floor. S&G dial lock is pretty much bulletproof.ĭoor organizer, with holsters and pouches, electrical hookup and lights.
When it fails, you're going to be pissed. You can figure the heavier one has more steel in it. Compare the weight of the safes you're looking at. You'll also want locking bolts on all four sides of the door. You want a solid, thick piece of steel for the outer door-don't fall for that "composite" outer door that looks massive, but could opened with an axe.

Check the fire rating on the safe-the longer and higher the temp, the better.Ī good safe has a lot of thick steel and are very heavy.
